What car would you want to own for the rest of your life?

Imagine if you were visited by the Car Fairy, floating down like Tinkerbell, to rest on your lap. If you didn't swat her away she would have a proposal to put to you. She would say:

"I can gift you a car. Any car. Brand new or fully restored classic. You can have the car as soon as I flick my wand.

There are conditions. You will own the car forever. It will never rust or fall apart but you'll need to service it, and put fuel in it, and tax it. Also, you will never be able to sell it, nor buy or drive any other car.

If I gift you your dream car. What would it be?"

And then you've got to choose. Stay as you are with finance payments and depreciation, or take the Car Fairy's gift? What would you choose?

Me? I'd have to consider what I might need from a car for for the rest of my life. I have a family, a wife and ten year old son, who one day will be a strapping teenager. And three dogs. And when it snows you can only get a four or front wheel drive car out of the drive. And I like to build stuff myself so am often to be found loading the car after a trip to the DIY store.

But I'd ignore all of that, and choose a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I ran this question on my site and twitter a few months back and was overwhelmed with the response. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Build a 1993 Volvo 240 wagon completely restored to stock except for a slightly boosted LS3 (600HPish) and great sound with Sirius XM. In a nice pearl white.

This is going to sound old hat. After having my GTI for 2.5 years now I love the versatility, fun and quality of the car. I do wish it had a bit more cargo room though. I also wish it was a little more comfortable on long highway drives. To achive those I would opt for an RS4 Avant.

Kinja'd!!!

In this color with the adjustable suspension. It's sleeper, roomy and flexible. I just wish it got better MPG.

So, my second choice would be this.

The answer is clearly Aston Martin DBS. Ageless looks, excellent performance, excellent comfort, and everything in between (including the option of a 3rd pedal).

Unless of course you need to cart kids around...then you'd have to go for the DB9 for the 2+2 seating arrangement. If you have more kids than that, you'll just have to take multiple trips.

If I had to choose, it would be an Alfa 2600 Zagato.

Kinja'd!!!

However, I think I might have to turn the fairy-lady down. I don't think I'd have nearly as much fun with just one dream car. I'd rather have 4 or 5 cheaper but still damn cool cars than 1 really expensive one.

I really hate to be that guy, because the love for these cars has been beat to shit here on Oppo, but it's still the right answer for me:

That interior, plus that performance, equals something I could happily live with every day for the rest of my life. A 911 is probably in the cards for my daily driver when I'm in my 30s, so I see no reason not to do it in the utmost of style if money is no object and I'm going to have to do it forever.

Because I have no friends. And I can't imagine driving a Lambo would ever get old. And if you need to carry something ... stick it in the passenger seat. Unpack the IKEA table and drive each piece home separately.

Tax, insurance, fuel, and service costs might break me though.

Quite similar to your choice however slightly different. It would be the Porsche 911 GT3. To me it is the absolute perfect mix between everyday usability (meaning it can be slightly compromised) and just sheer, pure, awesome, mesmerizing fun.

I have three kids, and the oldest is 8, so i'll need a back seat for a long time still. Therefore it'll be an XJ series III. With a 4.2. And the very rare 5speed manual.

Kinja'd!!!

Later on, when the kids have flown out, it'll get three DCOEs and a cage and suspension and brake upgrades. But it'll do just fine until then as it is.

Does this have the usual stipulation of being my only car, or can I have it in addition to what I've got?

For the former, an Audi R8, V8 with a manual (Coupe)

For the latter, realistically I'd have to go with a CTS-V Wagon, manual.

->sidebar 'Gallery' -> 'The Machines' .... lists most of their first builds. The gulf livery car isn't there yet, though.

The killer in the main question is... not being able to *drive* anything else. Not being able to *own* anything else... do-able.

I would rent and drive a utilitarian truck when I needed to, or a passenger van on a family trip, or something, if I could have an entropy-exempted, fully paid Singer 911.

See, the problem is, while I have a few dream cars in my mind of what I'd want to drive for the rest of my life, I can't commit to any of them because I've never driven any of them. While I'd love a '69 Boss 302, or a '67 Corvette stingray or a '69 COPO Camaro, I don't know how livable any of those are. I'd also be happy with a Ferrari or Lambo or something, but again, I don't know how that'd be for everyday.

So I have to stick with the limited cars I have driven, and of those, I'd probably choose my 1974 Chevy C10. If I could have that truck built just the way I like (including a modern engine swap), I'd love it.
